Service Learning is “a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.” It is “a philosophy, pedagogy, and model for community development that is used as an instructional strategy to meet learning goals and/or content standards”.
Service learning at SCIE can be defined as: “A form of experiential education where learning occurs through a cycle of action and reflection as students seek to achieve real objectives for the community and deeper understanding and skills for themselves.” It involves students in service projects to apply classroom learning for local agencies that exist to effect positive change in the community.
It is a learning experience that combines community service with preparation and reflection. SCIE supports the active involvement of students in service learning environments which help to enhance personal and interpersonal development by learning through experience. Service learning provides students with opportunities for self-determination and collaboration with others, fostering a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment from their work.
Every year the school will organise events such as Charity Walk, Raise & Give Day etc. and recruit students as volunteers to raise money for supporting programs in Captivating Fund.
