Flag Rising Ceremony in March
2017-03-08

[SCIE web news, March 7th, 2017]  In March, at south, the weather became warmer and warmer. With the paces of spring moving closer and closer, the breath of vitality permeated everywhere. In a growing season like this, Mr. Greenwood, our principal, shared a poem, which was a celebration of spring for us:

The trees are coming into leaf              树在长出嫩叶

Like something almost being said;        就好像说了什么

The recent buds relax and spread,       新芽轻松舒展

Their greenness is a kind of grief.         绿色却有点忧郁

Is it that they are born again                  是树重生了吗

And we grow old? No, they die too,     或是我们老了?不,它们也死去

Their yearly trick of looking new           一年一度复苏的年轻

Is written down in rings of grain.          写进一圈圈的纹理

Yet still the unresting castles thresh     然而骚动不宁的城堡

In fullgrown thickness every May.        在每一个五月丰厚成熟

Last year is dead, they seem to say,     去年死去了,它们好像在说

Begin afresh, afresh, afresh.                   重新开始,重新,重新

He said it might be a chance for us to begin afresh. Put aside those bad habits that you have been accumulating over the years.

And then, Mr. Greenwood invited the head of physics department, Thomas, to come up to stage to announce the name list of students who won prizes in the British physics Olympiad. Mr. Greenwood congratulated these students and presented certificates to them.

After the good news from the physics department, the head of math department, Erickson, also brought us the good news that SCIE students got awards in the UK challenge. In this competition, 96 students participated, and 71 students got the awards. Since there were too many students got awards, he invited the top scorer in each year level to come up stage to accept the awards. They were MollyJamie Ellison and Eric, in which Ellison and Eric got 100% in the competition. He also said there would be a Waterloo completion coming up and information could be found on TV screen or on bulletin. Students who wanted to register also could talk to their teachers.

At the end of last semester, we had the announcement of the principal essay competition.  The topic of this year was to describe utopia and dystopia. Mr. Greenwood said Most of the students focused on dystopia. And good essays are those develop a convincing argue through a series of stages, each stage building logically on the last. And then he announced the winners of this competition. There were 2 runners-up, Maggie and James. And the winner was Eavan. Mr. Greenwood presented them the awards.

Next, it was about the naming of the two turtles in the school pond. Mr. Greenwood invited the prefect, Neil Qiao to announce the final decision and the reasons. Firstly, Neil Qiao introduced the determination of the turtles’ sex, which was according to the thickness of their shell. The one had a thicker shell was determined as male while the one had a thinner shell was determined as female. The male turtle was named as Rhett in English and “水饺” in Chinese, while the female turtle was named as Scarlett in English and “汤圆”in Chinese. Scarlett and Rhett were protagonists from the worldly famous work, Gone with the wind. And the original meaning of “Rhett” was fire (), while “Scarlett” originally meant red(红). It meant we wished our school would be booming like red fire. In addition, “汤圆” and ”水饺” were traditional Chinese food. Firstly, their shapes were round, like the turtles’ shells; secondly, they were put in the water and our turtles were in the water; thirdly, they were food eaten in family reunion in Chinese tradition, which represented that we were a big family as well as had the festival connotation in our culture.

At last, Mr. Greenwood invited Gary to come up to stage to announce students who had reached a certain standard in the Global Citizen Awards:
