My learning feast--Earthquake Report
2017-05-03

[SCIE web news, May 3rd, 2017] My name is Ellen and i am currently a G2 student. During my review for IGCSE Geography CIE exam. I found the case study about Japanese earthquake and tsunami really intriguing and it brought me back to 2011 when the most devastating disaster struck Japan.

The earthquake was reported with magnitude 9.0 struck Japan on 11th March 2011, Friday afternoon. It is the fifth largest earthquake recorded worldwide. A Tsunami approached the country right after the earthquake.

Japan is located between the Pacific oceanic plate and Eurasian plate. When two plates collide, the oceanic plate with higher density sub-ducts under the Eurasian plate causing subduction. The destructive movement of the two plates causes tension and pressure to build up. When the pressure is released, a huge amount of energy is also released, traveling through the plate up to the surface. That is why earthquake occurs. The seismic waves underneath the plate cause the bottom of the ocean to move up and down, generating huge waves from the ocean and causing Tsunami.

The impacts were huge and irrevocable. Japan was prepared for the earthquake but not the tsunami. The aftershock was hitting continuously, causing more death and injuries in the cities. The bridges collapsed and buildings were washed away. People were homeless and urgently needed to be evacuated. Radiation was recorded after the nuclear stations melt down, it would cause mutation and serious damage to local people and creatures in the future. Economically, The yen and Japanese stock fell sharply.

The disaster was ruthless but the nations worldwide offered significant help and aid to Japan. 6 years have passed the Japan is making massive progress in rebuilding the cities.
