My memorable summer school in 2017
2017-08-16

[SCIE web news, Aug 16th, 2017] Under the sunshine of California, I spent my four weeks of summer in University of Southern California with challenges and fullness.

My course is called News reporting in a digital age, which is a branch of journalism. Originally, I thought that the professor would taught us a lot of theories, about how to write a report normatively and so on. However, from the start of the course, the professor said that he would never use the textbook or followed the syllabus since he hoped that journalism is free for us. Every day, we spent 2 hours discussing what was the news, how we would write them if we are the editors and should we included the victim’s true name and everything. I wasn’t used to this type of learning mode at first because I felt like I wasn’t learning anything useful. Nevertheless, the professor gradually turned our class into a newsroom.

In a class that had 21 people with 8 different nationalities, everyone thought distinctively on news and the ideas derived from different cultures would always be bouncing and producing sparkles. I also involved into the discussion, bringing in some Chinese perspectives.

Other than that, we also went on field trip every week to interview people and posted our interviews on social media to share with others. Surprisingly, the professor didn’t correct anything on our interviews, instead, our interviews were shown to all the classmates and were discussed by everyone. This gave us space to write the stories that we wanted. I walked through different avenues in LA during these four field trips, getting more and more handy with my job and gaining some really good interviews from different people.

I truly stepped out of my comfort zone and made a breakthrough during this summer.
