A different detention
2017-10-08

[SCIE web news, Oct 13th, 2017] On 12th of October, three boys were found to be sweeping the leaves off the school ground at the front gate of SCIE during the lunchbreak. These 3 boys were the students in Elaine’s physics class and nearly an hour ago, all of them had made the biggest mistake to an simplest physic question. As a punishment to the boys’ light-headed attitude in class, Elaine gave the boys an informal detention at lunchtime to aid the cleaners at school by helping them to sweep the fallen leaves.

It started at 12:30, students were asked to assemble at the mailbox. Elaine arrived earlier to prepare tools for the students. Each student was given a specific area that they’re responsible for. Elaine also joint the students to clean up the region near the front gate.

For students, the detention was more of an experience rather than punishment. Sweeping the leaves and assembling them isn’t an easy task. These were originally the task of cleaners employed in SCIE, where each cleaner will have to bear the sunburn during their work. Students also realized that sweeping leaves isn’t as easy as it seems because of the friction on the ground and the incoming season had made the job even harder since there was strong wind that continually blows withered leaf off the tree and dissemble the gathered leaves sweep by the students. Elaine claimed that she’d always had students in her form class to do the cleaning, she does this for a better community in school’s environment and to let the students experience hard work of the workers in school. Elaine said this while assisting the students to the cleaning, she was experienced to the event and had gave some of her own advice to the student. In the end, photos were taken and each boy who had their detention had learnt their lesson.

From this detention, student had not only realized their mistakes that they had made on the physic questions but learnt something more important. They have learnt to respect and appreciate the works of the insignificant members around the community. For that, hopefully they will work harder in their own academic studies while taking care to their own community.
