Finding my first internship in the US
2017-10-19

[SCIE web news, Oct 19th, 2017] I am 2016er graduate Daniel Liu. I’m now a student in Emory University. By sharing my stories in the US and some of my personal thoughts, I hope to give you an insight into what student life here is really like. This can also act as a guidance for your future college choice.

When you ask an international student: what’s the most challenging thing in college. They are likely to answer: finding an internship. Finding an internship is extremely hard, especially for freshman and sophomores, since most companies only accept juniors and seniors.

I had failed to find an internship during my freshman year. Now as a sophomore, with a better resume, I decided to give it a try again. I logged in to Handshake, a job searching platform for Emory students, to apply for internships. After viewing the list of available jobs, I applied for a dozen intern positions.

After two weeks, I logged back in to check my application status. Almost as I expected, they were all refusal letters but one, an interview offer from Bridgestone Golf, a big international company with its headquarter located in Tokyo, Japan.

I was exhilarated. I went to the Emory Career Center and made an appointment to have a mock interview, which can help me better prepared for my interview. On the day of the interview, I drove to the Bridgestone office. After filling out many paper works, a staff led me into a conference room, with a big table and three people sitting on the other side of the table. Obviously, they were the interviewer.

The whole interview process was really formal. They asked me several questions regarding my resume which I was well prepared of. Thanks to the mock interview, this interview went fairly well. After the interview, I went back to school and waited for my result.

A week later, I received an email saying that I am accepted. The job position will be Marketing Product Support Intern, with a salary of $10 per hour. By accepting this offer, I became the first international student ever in my school’s history to secured an internship during his sophomore year.
