Physics Field Trip--Billiard day (cue sports)
2017-10-28

[SCIE web news, Oct 28th, 2017] In the 3rd and 4th period of October 27th, the original A1 physics class took place in the billiard room just besides the school. The content of that class is about learning dynamics and momentum.

How does these two related together is obvious.  In linear momentum, we explore the momentum of a moving ball and a stationary ball which can be applied to the momentum afterward and the different velocity of the two balls. And that’s the theme of the cue sports as well. A bunch of students in our class were already skilled player which could be seen from their normative posture.

Our physic teacher Elaine has been trained to practice billiard for a period of time. Therefore, as the photo suggested, her beautiful posture showed her extraordinary performances. Fortunately, the right posture is not difficult to imitate. The camera caught various expressions on their face, focused or serious or nervous or shocked.

During the play, Mr. Chopin Huang and Mrs. Elaine Liu kept watching us and giving us ideas about the angle and forces. They pretend not to see when we poked the ball out of the table and kept praising us all the time.

But we as newbies didn’t understand exactly the rules of the rue sports. For example, we can directly win if we poke the black one into the hole. But we choose to keep playing it just for fun.

The posture is important. How to keep the cue in your hand in a beautiful way is crucial. Someone held the cue like a broom or a shovel which is quite funny to see how ball slips out of their control. Someone held it like golf players and other people were like holding sword which was quite elegant.

In nutshell, playing cue sports is a shrewd way to learning momentum because it is the most vivid sport in reality which can visually display the gist of the topic. We students have a lot new experiences.
