Flag Raising Ceremony in November
2017-11-06

[SCIE web news, Nov 6th, 2017] Autumn is coming with soft winds, and cooling everyone’s minds gently. Early this morning, all teachers and students in SCIE came back and joined the November Flag Rising Ceremony, which was conducted by our academic deputy principal, Mr. Martin Cole, as our principals Mr. Greenwood and Mr. Mobsby were attending the FOBISIA Leadership Conference in Malaysia.

Started with Joe’s traditional style, Mr. Martin Cole read a poem from Pablo Neruda, to awaken everyone’s love for the small animals around us. Then he announced some notices as below: for A2 Oxbridge applicants, they should collect their invitations of mock interviews from principal office(Sherry) as soon as possible; The registration of Principal Essay Competition which examines students social-science thinking and English writing skill, will start on this Friday, 10 Nov. It is strongly suggested that students should actively participate as it would play a positive role on their college applications, especially for the major of social sciences.

Last year, our G2-A2 students who studied Spanish in school, participated the FOBISIA Online Language Competition, competing against 23 FOBISIA schools and over 100 schools in the Northern Hemisphere for a whole week. Finally, we won as the 8th place in the category and Neil (Qiao Lingao) achieved the highest mark in China; Except the good news from the Spanish students, our students in Japanese classes has also brought us some good results: more than 93% students achieved A/A* in the Edexcel Japanese exams. All these great achievements are the evidences of our successes in Language teaching, and we’re looking forward to more outstanding results for next year.

The Head of Fire House, Chet thanked all the participants for bringing us all those amazing basketball competitions between teachers and students. During the competitions, we were not only enjoying the fun but also promoting the friendship among us. And we’re looking forward to the next one this Friday, which would be absolutely exciting.

We’re going to have a Christmas concert on Dec 6, and Mike, the head of Music department, welcomed everyone to participate and show his/her talent on the stage. For the students who are not in Music classes but interested in performing, they should send their programs to school as soon as possible.

The head of ECA, Mr. Gary Ellis reminded everyone again of the coming competitions between teachers and students on this Friday, and the Saturday Sport Day, hoping everyone actively participate and enjoy the games. What came next was the award time for the House Dodge Competition which was finished last week: For the girls’ game, Metal House -  First place, Wood House – Second place; For the boys’ game, Fire House – First Place, Metal House – Second place. The basketball competition of A level was also pretty intense: Metal House had to settle for the silver ahead of the Wood House, which won the first place.

This year, the SCIE Maker Space Competition was quite eye-catching, attracting students who were keen on invention and creation to actively participate. Finally, approximately, 30 students came and participated this competition, which was more like a trial to them, as it required multiple skills of communication, logical thinking, language, ICT, researching and international-mindedness. Not only the students, but also the coordinators, our teachers, were working overtime to devote their precious knowledge and experiences with their teams to complete the projects. They are Back Yang (Biology), Bryan Wang (Physics), Robert Liu (Chemistry) and Swati (Head of IT, Green Oasis). Everyone applauded and congratulated for the winners, while Ms Diane Anthony (Computer Science teacher) was making the announcement and distributing the prizes to them.
