Class trip of Metal 6 in Huada Genomics Institute

[SCIE web news, Nov 29th, 2017] On the 18th of November, 2017, Ms. Elaine took us to an exciting trip to study our own athletic gene in Beijing Genomics Institute (also known as Hua Da Ji Yin) in Yantian District.


 

There were 6 girls and 7 boys except for our teacher in total. There were two young and beautiful female teachers already waiting for us when we arrived. Before we stepped into the tidy lab with all the unfamiliar equipment, we had to put our belongings in the locker and put on the white lab-gowns and wore white gloves.


 

We first learn the basic information about DNA, the magical Deoxyribonucleic acid that is the preservation of genetic information. It is made up of deoxynucleotide and base pairs including A-T, C-G.

The teacher also uses a model to explain the left handed double coiled spiral structure. It is quite difficult for me to remember all these things but the knowledge is very clear to understand. Some of the elder students from our class or students who study biology already knew some basic knowledge, I was really impressed.


 

After that we started the long and difficult process of our experiment. At first we had to filter the DNA from our saliva. These is almost the longest process as we must add all of the different liquid with pipette, a very accurate apparatus with different ranges and has the look of a gun. It took up our morning to the noon. Some of the liquid is so little that I have to look close to the pipette almost with my glasses touching it. We also use a cool equipment called centrifuge that can reach 12000r per minutes to speed up the last filtering process. We also use a machine to test out the concentration of my DNA. Most of the classmates have around 100 while mine is only 50. The lowest is 20 while the highest unbelievably reach a record of 1300. Even the teacher said that this is the highest one she has ever seen. It was also our responsibility to extract the gene we want from the DNA using different volume of DNA due to our different concentration. and copy them using marker solution and the other complex solution I didn’t memorize to.


 

After that we are all very tired so we walked to a small nearby restaurant to enjoy our lunch.

In the afternoon we teared the X gene apart in order to make a different to the R gene. It is said that people carrying RR gene had explosive power while the XX have better endurance. RX is both alright. At last we use the polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to tell apart the genes. ( RR: 600; XX: 100, 500; RX: 600, 500, 100)


 

I was really sad as I didn’t get my result. Maybe I did something wrong, but the experience is truly worthy. My partner, the only G2 student is the only student with RX genes while the other G1 boys and A1 girls shares the same XX gene with great endurance. The teacher was surprised by us again as most of her other students have RR. I guess SCIE students are more endurable. But there are still one third of the class who had no result including me.


 

I got home really late that day, exhausted and tired. But the teachers there and Ms. Elaine and all my fellow classmates are all tired as well so there is really nothing for me to complain. It is truly an exciting adventure and I learn a lot from it.
