The last Flag-raising ceremony in 2017
2017-12-04

[SCIE web news Dec 4th, 2017] On the last month in 2017, the sun shone bright and brought warm weather to Shenzhen in its early Autumn. All staff and students in SCIE participated the Dec flag raising ceremony as scheduled.

In order to memorize for the last month of 2017, Our principal, Mr. Greenwood read a poem from W.H.Auden, The More Loving One.

Looking up at the stars, I know quite well

That, for all they care, I can go to hell,

But on earth indifference is the least

We have to dread from man or beast.

How should we like it were stars to burn

With a passion for us we could not return?

If equal affection cannot be,

Let the more loving one be me.

Admirer as I think I am

Of stars that do not give a damn,

I cannot, now I see them, say

I missed one terribly all day.

Were all stars to disappear or die,

I should learn to look at an empty sky

And feel its total dark sublime,

Though this might take me a little time.

December, it was not only the month for celebrating Christmas, but also the interview month for the students who applied Oxbridge. This year, we have dozens of students who have the chance to go to Oxbridge for the interview, and some students also received invitation letters of interview from other colleges(majors). Best wishes for them and hope they can get some satisfactory results. In the meanwhile, the Principal Essay competition was about to begin, and it was hoped that the students who want to apply for Humanities subjects can actively participate this competition, which would play an important role in their writing skills, humanity accomplishment and university application.

In the FOBISIA Online Language Competition, we competed against students from FOBISIA schools and over 100 schools in the Northern Hemisphere, and we won as the 8th place in the category. Many students gained medals of gold/silver/bronze and Credit awards. One of our candidates, Miya achieved Top in the world in the Japanese competition and won the Elite Award. Maria, the head of Language department recognized students’ outstanding performance, and Mr. Greenwood issued the certificates accordingly.

The head of ECA, Mr. Gary Ellis emphasized the importance of the community service to the school, and each student must finish the volunteer hours as required, and he also believed that everyone should have a profound understanding on how meaningful it was for participating the community service. Gary also made an announcement on the final results of House competitions which were held in Nov, and issued the certificates to the Houses. In the G Level:  for Basketball Game, Fire House and Metal House did a great job, winning the first and second place respectively. For the debate competition, the candidates in Wood and Water House were intelligent and quick-witted, and they got the first and second place accordingly.  But for A level, it was Water House which won the first place, and Wood House came the second. In the A level lip-synch singing competition, Wood House won the first place by presenting an excellent performance, while Fire House got the second place. In the House Cooking competition, Wood House and Water House gained everyone’s recognition of their amazing cooking skills. In the Spelling Bee competition, the honor and prizes belonged to Wood, Metal and Fire Houses. In the G level lip-synch singing competition, Wood House performed outstandingly and won the first place while Metal House gained the second place. Until now, the top three winners were Metal House, Fire House and Wood House. All these results were won by the students who actively participated various activities, and fought for their own houses.

At last, one of the Prefect, Julian made a speech and emphasized to everyone that the Prefect group was an effective channel for the students who want to communicate with school, and its priority was to serve to the students. He also hoped that students can contact Prefect whenever they need help or have any issue in school, together we can make SCIE more better.
