IGCSE Physical Education trip to the Chinese Basketball All-star game
2018-01-29

[SCIE web news, Jan 29th, 2018] On Sunday 14th January our GCSE PE class travelled to Shenzhen Universiade to watch the Chinese Basketball Association (CBS) All-star game and show. This a game that takes place only once-a-year and it is a showcase of the best players across all of China. During the regular season, fans of the league vote for the best players across the league to represent the North or South in this showcase event.

The game itself was a great spectacle of offensive basketball, due to the nature of the game, neither team played a lot of tough defensive basketball, but it was great to watch. The half-time show was brilliant, the 3-point shoot-out competition with one player scoring 22 in 1 minute and winning a bonus of 50,000RMB. Then we saw the slam dunk contest with the overall winner a 19-year-old student that managed to dunk whilst jumping over 3 other players.

During our theory classes this semester we have been studying skill acquisition. A big part of this is how players define the differences between skill and ability and how performers skills may vary depending on a range of different factors. Then, how we judge performance based on certain characteristics. We have also now moved on to studying the psychological process a performer goes through when learning different skills.

It was great to see my class able to relate what they have learned in class, with positive conversations in such a wonderful setting. The class were fantastic and were very excited to watch the game. I hope they enjoyed it and can now use what they have seen to help develop their theoretical knowledge and understanding.

Guo Xinni:

Last week we went to watch the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) All-star basketball. We started by riding bikes to the metro. It was a great way to get there; environmentally friendly and good exercise.

When we arrived at the stadium we went to find our seats near the basketball court and we were in a great position to see the game, behind one of the baskets. I have not seen many basketball games before so I did not know the players’ names. But I still remember Ding Yanyuhang and Yi jianlian. Yi Jianlian is one of the most wonderful players in China; he has such a good shot. Ding Yanyuhang is also excellent. He is low profile, a great team player and generous to pass the ball a lot.

When the first half was over they did a half time show, this was really interesting. Players showed their amazing basketball skills such as three-point shooting and slam dunks. We were supporting the southern team; the game was close but in the last quarter the south played better, and they finally won.

My classmates and I really enjoyed watching the game. It was a great experience and I would love to go again. The whole evening was good and we got to see a very entertaining half time show.

Zhuang Yiheng:

Last weekend I went to see the CBA All-star time with my iGCSE PE class. It was my third time to watch the CBA but it was the first time to see the All-star game. First we rode the bike to the metro station, it was fun and environmentally friendly, then we took the metro to the stadium. Biking is good for our knees and can improve muscular strength and muscular endurance. After about 1 hour metro and 20 minutes walking, we got to the stadium; an octagon shape with different colours changing all the time.

After finishing dinner, we entered the stadium with excitement and happiness. As we know; the All-star game is for the best players in the league to play, presenting a high quality performance to the audience. Our seats are right behind the basketball stands, enough for us to see the players faces clearly.

Yi jianlian, one of the best players in china, performed really well in the game. He made some ally-oops assisted by his teammates. Every time he finished his dunk, the whole stadium cheered for him. His field goal percentage was pretty good. It showed his performance was goal-directed to entertain the audience. Guo ailun is also one of the best players in china, I think he is the best point guard in china. He made some really nice passes to his teammates and lay-ups in some really fancy ways. It showed his great agility and balance.

The half time show was the most interesting and exciting game, especially the 3-point game and the slam-dunk contest. In the 3-point game, Yu changchun, a normal player from Jiang su, beat Jimmer Fredette; who is the best 3 pointer shooter in CBA and last years champion at the same time he also broke the record for 3-pointers in a single game. In the slam-dunk game, a university students who is just 19, jumped over 3 people, one of them is 2.14m! He went on to win the contest.

At last, the southern team played better and they finally won. It was a really good and well-organized field trip. I hope we can have more field trip like this to watch different types of sports games.

Chen Weijung:

Last Sunday evening, our PE class went to watch the CBA All-star game. Despite having a good time, I also acknowledged many practical things that I have learned in my GCSE PE classes:
Skill V.S. Ability
Yi: He can dunk because of his height and his natural ability; something that he has always had but still worked hard on improving. At the end of the game his field goal percentage was 60%. Shooting the basketball is a skill that he has learned and had to work hard to develop over many hours of practice.
Guo: He showed great skill when dribbling the ball; which has been developed with lots of practice. Although he is not tall, he has a lot of power. This is an ability that, although he has developed, he was born with.
There are 6 main factors that can affect the variation of skill level within a performer.

MACAFATE
MACAFATE is an acronym which stands for: M-Motivation, A-Age, C-Culture, A-Anxiety, F-Facilities, A-Arousal conditions, T-Teaching and E-Environment. The behaviour of the players during the game showed that they all wanted to score a lot and win the game. Everybody was attacking at high speed because they were all very competitive and wanted to entertain the crowd. Most of the players in Sunday night’s game were Chinese players that have grown up in China. In Chinese culture, basketball has become a traditional sport. This has only happened over the last 2 decades; the sport has become extremely popular, especially to young people. Many people play basketball from a very young age but the basketball culture in China is still not comparable to that in America.
The facilities used by CBA players are of the very best quality, which gives the players the best opportunities to develop their skills.
What are the qualities that characterise a skilled performance?

GAFCAC
This is another acronym that we use to remember the key characteristics that should be evident in a skilled performance.
In basketball, ‘goal-directed, accurate, coordination, fluent, consistent and aesthetically pleasing’ are all very important but still has a ranking. However, you could argue that “Aesthetically pleasing” is not as important as the others when playing basketball.
Goal-directed:   Adams, Yi, and Fredrick were the best players. They shot the most times of the two teams. But at the same time, all the players were very goal-directed. They all knew what they should do and aimed for higher scores all the time.
Accurate:   Skora (86%), Han (86%) and Tao (100%) had the three highest field goal percentages of the two teams and the average field goal percentage of the two teams is 60% so the overall accuracy was good but could have been better.
Fluent:  The whole game is extremely fluent, there were many quick attacks and good passes in the games. Most importantly, there were few fouls in the game, this may have come out All-star game tradition, with the game being mostly entertainment for the crowd.
Consistent:  This part in this game was not perfect; there were a few periods of time that neither team could score, sometimes up to a minute or two. This indicates that the players were not paying full attention all the time.
Coordination: Being able to use more than 2 body parts at the same time is vital for a basketball player. This is possibly the base of all their other skills. Everybody was very good in this part during the game.

Aesthetically pleasing:  In this part, the stars did very well. Especially the members who took part in the dunk competition. They performed very complex movements and audiences enjoyed.
