Debatable, a wonderful debate competition took place at SCIE
2018-02-05

[SCIE web news, Feb 5th, 2018] On Feb 3rd, last Saturday, Debatable, an original debate competition created by SCIE Debate Club and SFLS Debate Club, finally took place in SCIE. Students started to register at 8 in the morning and prepared to face their first round of debate.

The topic for the day was “Ethnic minorities should be given more benefits from the government”, a topic that includes many different aspects such as law, politics, and geography etc. Debaters prepared well, and the judges of the first two rounds, Karen, Sharpay, Ogeta, and Amy were very impressed with the debates.

After the two preliminary rounds in the morning, the debaters had lunch while the staff calculated their points. The scores would decide which teams were able to enter the final round of the competition, which would take place in the afternoon. After lunch, the debaters came back to 213 to await the results.

And the results are in- the contestants for the final round were Bobby and Sean against Matt and Smith. After the results came out, all contestants filed into the room where the final round would take place.

After an exciting final round of debate the contestants waited in 213 for the final results. After a long discussion between the judges- Patricia, Karen, and Jacky- the results were ready to be revealed. Congratulations to Bobby and Sean as the winning team of the very first Debatable Debate Competition, with Matt and Smith coming in as runner-ups.

After a day of work, the very first Debatable came to an end. Not only do we hope that this competition inspired students to get more into debate, but we hope that it’s a good start to what will become an SCIE tradition.

We’ll see you next year!
