SCIE held the Flag-lowering Ceremony
2018-04-27

[SCIE web news, April 27th, 2018] At the end of April, students in SCIE finished their last lesson of this academic year, making themselves ready for the coming international exams – tests of academic performance, which will be last for over a month. And at the same time, we were also about to send off the class of 2018 graduates. At this afternoon, all teachers and students came to the schoolyard to participate the flag lowering ceremony of this academic year.

Our principal, Mr. Joe Greenwood conducted this ceremony. As an outgoing principal, he was filled with strong feelings and shared it with us by reading a poem from Tagore’s Gentanagli:

…I am like a remnant of a cloud of autumn uselessly roaming in the sky, O my sun ever-glorious! Thy touch has not yet melted my vapour, making me one with thy light, and thus I count months and years separated from thee.

If this be thy wish and if this be thy play, then take this fleeting emptiness of mine, paint it with colours, gild it with gold, float it on the wanton wind and spread it in varied wonders.

And again when it shall be thy wish to end this play at night, I shall melt and vanish away in the dark, or it may be in a smile of the white morning, in a coolness of purity transparent…

Then, our incoming principal Mr. Neil Mobsby announced that, advocated by PE department, SCIE established our own sport team, named ‘Storm’, and we have joined the Shenzhen International Schools Athletic Committee(SISAC). And in the future, SCIE Storm will compete with other international schools in Shenzhen on behalf of SCIE, and it’s believed that all of us will be impressed by our athletes’ great performance.

Julian (Humanities teacher) presented prizes to the winners of ‘Dressing as famous historical character’ in the Humanities Week Events, which has been enthusiastically responded by all teachers and students in SCIE. They tried their best to play some surprising tricks and brought a lot of meaningful historical figures to life.

Mr.Luke Walker, the HoD of PE department announced the final results of Active April. Advocated by PE department, all staff in SCIE have participated this inter-departmental competition. In whole April, every staff has recorded his/her own exercise time, walking/running distance and also the kinds of sports they played, for example, hiking, running, cycling, swimming, playing basketball/handball/football, etc. The aim was to raise everyone’s awareness of exercise, and see the benefits and enjoy such healthy attitude of life. For the individual competition, the top three teachers were David Arthur (1st place), Luke Walker (2nd place), Clare McCarron (3rd place), and in the group ranking, English department won the first place, and they received warm applause and a prize from school.

Thomas, the HoD of Physics, recognized students’ great performance in British Physics Olympiad – total 75 students were rewarded. What’s more, in addition to Gold/Silver/Bronze prizes, our students also made an impressive achievement in the laboratory competition. Our principal presented the awards to these outstanding students. Thomas also announced the winners of British Physics Challenge, and they all came to the stage to receive warm applause.

On behalf of school, Gary thanked all students for their active participation, House captains for their great organization and teachers for their guidance and cheering.

Lisa, Our Pastoral Deputy Principal expressed her gratitude to the Prefect team for their support to school and believed that every student could feel it in the same way while he/she participated in school various activities. Everyone applauded loudly to thank the Prefect team.

A new Prefect team came to the stage and it was hoped that they could continue to serve others and contribute to build a more harmonious life in SCIE.

Finally, it came to the last session of the ceremony – flag-lowing. Our principal Mr. Greenwood asked everyone to face the national flag and clam down to meditate. For the graduating students, this was their last time to get together in SCIE. ‘Please look back on your school life, your memories with your teachers and friends, remember them, value them as incredible treasure in your heart.’ All teachers and students were just standing there, watching the flags lowing, filled with boundless melancholy and nostalgia.

After the flag-lowing, on behalf of the whole school, Prefect sent a gift – a school flag signed with all students’ signature to the outgoing principal, to express love and appreciation to him.

In the end, Principal Mr. Greenwood reminded students that we still had six weeks to be together and hoped everyone could do their best and be confident in the coming international exams after the short holiday.
