My Internship experience: Part 3
2018-04-20

[SCIE web news,  April 20th,  2018]  I am 2016er graduate Daniel Liu. I’m now a student in Emory University. By sharing my stories in the US and some of my personal thoughts, I hope to give you an insight into what student life here is really like. This can also act as a guidance for your future college choice.

In the previous articles, I introduced some of my regular duties during the internship. This time I am going to talk about a challenging project that was assigned to me by my boss.

There is another intern named Justin that works in the department. He is a senior from Georgia University, with major of Marketing & Finance. His role in the department is to do research on the competitors and design marketing strategies. On November, one day, my boss called me and Justin in and assigned us a project. He wanted us to design a new concept product for the company. It can be anything related to golf, but it must be practical and backed up by reasons and data. We need to first come up with the product that has a potential market. Then we need to approximate the cost for the product and come up with a retail price. We need to decide the distribution channel for the product and our marketing strategies. In the end, we need to put all pf our work in a presentation before the given deadline – the end of December.

After receiving this assignment, I started to brainstorm with Justin to see if we can come up with any ideas. After several ideas being proposed and then denied, we settled on the idea of a golf ball training kit. We asked our boss if there is any similar product in the company’s product line and we were glad to know that there wasn’t any. We then went through researches about other competitors and the price range for the product. After several weeks, we decided our selling price and estimated profit margin. We also designed our distribution channel and marketing methods, and organized everything into a PPT. Before the deadline, we finished the project and made our presentation successfully.
