  • Mission statement
    The SCIE Student Union exists to improve students’ educational experience by:
    • representing students' views, concerns and aspirations to the school management;
    • organising student-initiated events that enrich campus life;
    • providing opportunities for developing leadership skills
  • Composition
    There are eight elected positions in the SU.With their responsibilities, they are:
    • Chairman: takes overall responsibility for carrying out the duties of the SU. This position can only be filled by an A2 student. Specific duties include:
      • Decisions regarding organization for SU sponsored events
      • Coordination various departments to achieve a specific outcome, i.e. running an event
      • Chairing SU meetings
      • Maintaining the overall SU budget
      • Representing SCIE in dealings with other school student bodies.
    • Treasurer: responsible for aspects of school budget for student initiated activities:
      • accepting funding applications from student led ECAs and events
      • organising and chairing meetings to discuss and approve or deny applications
      • ensuring that all spent funds are accounted for with receipts and invoices, and paperwork is done as per Finance rules
    • Head of Entertainment: is responsible for running entertainment events, including Halloween Night, Talent Show, the Chinese New Year Party. Specific duties include:
      • Stipulating general program
      • Making procedure for soliciting entries, maintaining standards, meeting deadlines
      • Deciding judging panel members, competition rules
      • Keeping an account of expenditure
    • Head of External Affairs: is responsible for contacting and liaising with outside bodies, for interschool events, sponsorship, etc. Specific duties include:
      • Maintaining contact with other similar student bodies of other schools on a range of matter, including festivals, sports, debating, exchange forums, MUN
      • Soliciting sponsorship from companies for general purposes or for specific events run by the SU
      • Helping other SU departments purchasing supplies
    • Head of Publicity: is responsible for disseminating information throughout the College. Specific duties include:
      • Maintaining student notice board
      • Checking that unauthorized information is not displayed
      • Helping other departments to publicise events by making posters, flyers, notices in registration folders or classrooms
      • Helping other SU departments by providing artistic designs for specific events
      • Running the student broadcast programme
    • Head of Sports: is responsible for working closely with the PE department and Heads of House on various sporting events. Specific duties include:
      • Providing views and suggestions from a student perspective in the organisation of sporting events
      • Organising student volunteers to work at sporting events
      • Working with External Affairs to organise interschool sports competitions
      • Helping PE Department to maintain sporting equipment
    • Head of Combined Services: is responsible for the improvement of student day to day living and organising fund-raising for charity. Specific duties include:
      • Collecting students’ views on canteen services and presenting them to the College management
      • Representing students in dormitory management
      • Organising sale of stationery to students as a way of raising funds and providing convenience to students
      • Organising charity events
    • Head of English Committee: is responsible for promoting the proper use of English amongst students. Specific duties include:
      • Helping Publicity Department to produce publicity materials in English
      • Organising events involving English such as the English Speaking Competition
      • Working with other SU departments where the use of English is an important feature.

 

Note:1) The chairman may appoint a secretary for doing various clerical work, such as taking meeting minutes, making phone calls, etc.

2)Each head of department may appoint up to 12 assistants to help them to carry out their duties.

  • Election
    • The SU elections will take place in the second and third week of the first semester
    • The existing SU shall be responsible for running the election process, including collecting candidate names, organising hustings, distributing and collecting ballots, and finally counting ballots and announcing results
    • Each student shall have one vote for each position in the election
    • Each candidate should satisfy minimal academic standards, which will be determined by the SAO before the election.
    • The candidate polling the highest number of votes will be the winner
  • Procedures
    • Relevant key members of the SU shall make announcements at Flag-raising ceremonies regarding various SU involved events
    • Each form class shall select three SU contact persons, one from each year level, to be available for SU to engage on whole school events
    • In terms of school administration, the SU comes under the responsibility of the Student Affairs Office, who has a supervision role over all its work
    • The SU shall maintain its designated office, i.e. having a roster of officials available during after school hours for inquiry from the student population
    • The SU shall provide a suggestion/grievance box outside its office
    • The SU shall keep a clear account of all monies received and spent
    • The SU shall carry out at least one formal survey each semester from the student population covering all aspects of school life, collate the results and present to relevant school departments.
