Admissions to SCIE Arts academy 2023

Grade Group: IGCSE student (G1)

Grade Equivalent: Students who have completed Junior 3 or Junior 2 in July 2023

Music student Art student
  • Students whose main instrument should be from strings families (violin, viola, cello, double bass), piano or musical theatre singers.
  • Students must have at least Grade 7 in music (Local exam board) or Grade 6 in Music (International exam boards e.g., ABRSM, LCM, RSL, Trinity, or equivalent)

Students should be skilled in traditional skills of drawing and painting.

    Students in Mainland of China should register with your ID Card Number; Students from Hongkong China, Macau China and Taiwan China, please register with your Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong,Macao and Taiwan Residents; Foreign students should register with your passport number and upload the passport scanning copy or photo.

Submit your work online for prescreening between January 17th to February 28th, 2023

Music student Art student

The candidate shall submit a prescreening recording which should include a personal statement and the instrumental/voice performance, total a maximum of 10 minutes.

- For the personal statement, it shall be about 3-minute and in English. The content should include an introduction of yourselves, your artwork, and your creative interests. When the personal statement was recorded, you can start to perform.

-For the instrumental/voice performance, please select two contrasting pieces of your choice, a maximum of 7 minutes. You may use equipment from home or school, or even use your mobile devices. The most important is that the sound quality of your recording is excellent and clearly show the student's technique. The repertoire does not have to be memorized.

Then, please upload your recording to a video website such as Youku, iQIY, Tencent, and then paste the link of your document to SCIE Application Platform.

 The candidates shall record a 3–minute video in English. The video content should include an introduction of yourselves, your artwork, and your creative interests. Please upload your recording to a video website such as Youku, iQIY, Tencent, and then paste the link of your document to SCIE Application Platform.

Afterwards, please produce a portfolio of work showing 7-15 pieces of practical drawings, western-style paintings and artworks demonstrating your personal interest.

The number of these three types of works should be balanced. If only a single category of works is uploaded, you may not pass the pre-screening.

You can use different media, such as pencil, pen, charcoal, acrylic or mix-media etc. Please upload an electronic portfolio to the candidate's home page and indicate the size of the work and the material used.

  • The results of prescreening will be released on March 8th, 2023.
  • If the candidate failed in the prescreening, he/she will be transferred to the traditional stream automatically.

  • Written Test: March 19th, 2023
  • Subject: English (no mathematics test for art & music students)

Mar 24, 2023

  • Publish the results of written test: March 24th, 2023
  • Students who pass the written test will attend the interview next weekend.

Apr 1, 2023

  • Interview date: April 1st, 2023
  • Interview and audition with the specialist. The music/art teacher will also test candidates’ English-speaking ability and overall quality during the audition.

-Candidates perform a selection of contrasting music of your choice in a program up to 5 mins.

-Candidates must present an instrumental/voice performance. The performance must be on your primary instrument.

-Candidates should plan to perform a solo with or without accompaniment (If you need an accompaniment, please provide it yourself). Candidates should select pieces that are technically and musically appropriate for your stage of musicianship.

-2.5-hour drawing exam: Still life or self-portrait from a mirror. (pencil)

-3-hour painting: Still life or self-portrait from a mirror (acrylic or watercolour).

  • The enrollment results will be released on April 3rd,2023.
  • SCIE would rank the candidates based on your specialist and English test result.

Tuition Fee: 288,000 RMB for the academic year 2023-2024

(Includes physical examination fee, campus insurance fee, extracurricular activity fees; not includes international examination fees, field trips or internships off campus, or summer camps/programs.)

Accommodation: 16,800 RMB (excluding weekends), or 19,800 RMB (including weekends) for the academic year 2023-2024.

Registration fee:¥600  WeChat/Alipay for paying the registration fee online (non-refundable)

Curriculum Arrangement
  1. All the art/music students must learn the CAIE art/music course at SCIE for 4 years. All specialist students should choose an art/music-related pathway when they apply to university.
  2. Except for the traditional compulsory subjects, the specialist students should study one more core subject: art/music. The period of the specialist (Art/ Music) subject will be doubled for the specialist student.
  3. SCIE Arts Academy students will be assigned to a specialist teacher, who will control progression.
  4. In G-level, specialist students must study English, mathematics, Chinese, PE, Combined Science or Chemistry (1 out of 2), and other 2 option class.
  5. IGCSE specialist students would learn 2-year IGCSE mathematics or the regular Maths course that most G1 students had taken.
  6. In AS level, specialist students must learn English, art/music and other 2-3 options.
  7. In AL level, specialist students must learn English, art/music and other 1-2 options.
  8. In principle, specialist students are not allowed to transfer to the traditional stream. But if specialist students want to apply, you shall send the transfer application after finishing the year of G2. The specialist students who want to transfer to traditional stream need to fulfil the following conditions:
  • -There is a vacancy available in related subjects.
  • -Pass the subject entry test.

*Appropriate optional subjects’ selection should be discussed with specialist teacher and UCO counselors and can be adapted according to personal abilities, applications requirements, and subject availability.

Notice: Candidates who haven’t decided their pathway can apply as a traditional student and choose art/music subject as an option (traditional CAIE art/music class).

There would be only one round of entry test for the specialist students in 2023. If the student doesn’t pass the specialist test, you can also apply the second round of entry test on May 28th of 2023 through the traditional stream.
