- IGCSE English as 2nd Language
- IGCSE Literature (Optional*)
In G1 , students pursue units of study that will extend the range of their English language in terms of style, vocabulary, structure and form. They will be introduced to a wide range of English literature and will be encouraged to become independent readers who enjoy books. Students will develop their ability to communicate effectively in a wide range of contexts and situations. They will be asked to be active participants in lessons and to positively contribute to the collaborative learning ethos of the class. The course teaching materials seek to widen students’ exposure to the English language by incorporating creative units that use non-fiction, fictional prose, media texts and poetry. Traditional reading comprehension and vocabulary acquisition tasks are also incorporated. In order to stimulate a healthy reading habit, all students will engage in a personal reading program. They will also take part in regular, small group speaking and listening sessions. Many opportunities to take part in English after-school clubs and competitions exist. Students are advised to take advantage of them. The G1 course may lead to the Cambridge English as a 2nd Language IGCSE. This qualification acts as a solid foundation for students to build up their English skills which are necessary for successfully moving on to further Education in an English speaking country.
