Due to an internal promotion, we are looking for a Head of Faculty-Science.

This role is a senior leadership role with responsibility for a large faculty over 50 teachers as well as carrying a whole-school responsibility for some aspect of the college. Applicants are welcomed with relevant teaching and leadership experience.

Principal Purpose of Position: To be responsible for leadership and development of the faculty, ensuring high quality of teaching and learning.

Specific Responsibilities

Leadership:

  • Contribute meaningfully to the Senior leadership team and set overall faculty goals and expectations, which to complement those of the Principal’s team.
  • Line manage 5 Heads of Subject, and be capable and willing to hold those colleagues accountable for performance of their teams on: high quality teaching, academic outcomes, university preparation, safeguarding, professionalism, collegiality and contributions to faculty and school.
  • Have high expectations of Heads of Subject and Science teachers, set high targets and ensure underperformance is relentlessly and formally challenged. Ensure objective and fair appraisal of all faculty members.
  • Support and develop Heads of Subject to be leaders of learning and maintain the highest quality of teaching and learning. 
  • Take on whole college responsibilities (based on skills and experience) 
  • Support recruitment of high-quality Science teachers
  • Liaise with the exams officer to ensure all external assessment criteria for the faculty are met
  • Maintain a professional and effective faculty working environment

Strategic Development:

  • Be responsible for exploring, planning, delivering and sustaining strategies, which develop SCIE in striving to be the best achieving international school in China on grades and university offers to Oxford, Cambridge, Ivy League
  • Liaise with other Heads of faculty and subject leaders to ensure suitable support within subject areas
  • Coordinate production of faculty reports and action plans as well as their implementation with emphasis on the elements of delivering, embedding and sustaining 
  • Develop formative and summative assessment strategies and collect suitable data for the faculty
  • Liaise with Academic Deputy Principal to organize and critically evaluate professional development for the faculty
  • Ensure suitable publicity and promotion of the faculty both internally and externally
  • Coordinate and critically evaluate Gifted and Talented activities within the Science faculty

Teaching and Learning:

  • Be a visible leader of learning and hold teachers to account on high quality teaching
  • Place high quality learning at the heart of the Science faculty and through continuous and robust monitoring, know the strengths and areas of development of all teachers 
  • Through a continuous and robust quality assurance cycle, offer targeted support to ensure high quality teaching and learning throughout the Science Faculty 
  • Develop a teaching culture, which complements the highly selective context of SCIE learners and their aspirations for progression to the world’s leading universities 
  • Ensure systematic and continuous low stakes formative assessment which moves learning forwards and supports learners in subject mastery is a hallmark of teaching and learning of the Science faculty at SCIE 
  • Develop, embed and evaluate innovations that improve and extend student learning
  • Coordinate the development of teaching and learning in the Science faculty in line with wider college goals 
  • Play a key role with the development, analysis, and review of the Science Faculty 
  • Support behaviors for learning strategies within faculty and support the pastoral team

Brief Description of SCIE

UK curriculum high school (Cambridge International AS/AL & IGCSE) teaching through the medium of English to mainly Chinese students preparing for overseas universities.

We also have an AP stream, running since 2025, hence there are some opportunities for teachers interested in AP teaching in various subjects.

The mission of the College is to educate Students in a Challenging, International Environment leading to academic achievement at the highest level, and to develop Social responsibility, Creativity, Independence and Enthusiasm, providing each student with the best preparation for future opportunities.

  • Highly selective – English and Mathematics admissions tests
  • Medium of instruction & communication – AS/AL English, with students functioning at first language level, mostly studying AS/AL English language or literature in A1/A2

Schedule

  • Working week: Monday – Friday 07:50 – 16:40 (with 07:30 start Mondays and early finish 15:00 Fridays)
  • Normal contact teaching time – 24 x 40-minute periods per week (approx. 50% timetable)
  • Personal time – 6 periods per week fixed in timetable when do not need to be at work.
  • Extra – Curricular Activity – 1 hour per week ECA after school (16:30 – 17:30)
  • CPD – large range of professional development available both online and face-to-face.
  • Holidays – 1 week for October China National Day holiday, 2 weeks Christmas holiday, 3 weeks Chinese New Year holiday, Chinese public holidays, mid-June to early August Summer holiday.

Pastoral

  • Undertake annual mandatory safeguarding training
  • Promote awareness of pastoral issues which may arise in faculty area and ensure these are reported as necessary
  • Ensure excellent health & safety standards within the faculty area for students & staff
  • Contribute as appropriate to pastoral care throughout the school community
