From April 14-18, SCIE proudly celebrated Zero Waste Week, an exciting and meaningful initiative aimed at promoting responsible production and consumption.
The week was packed with creative, informative, and hands-on activities that highlighted how small changes can lead to a big impact when it comes to sustainability.
The week launched with a humorous and engaging promotional video starring our beloved SCIE mascot, “Bear”.
In the video, Bear creatively reused plastic cutlery to make a paint holder, which he then used to create a fun and quirky piece of artwork. This lighthearted opening reminded everyone that zero waste doesn’t have to be boring – it can be fun, personal, and impactful.
Our main display area, located in the G-floor foyer outside the Halo Theatre, featured a variety of interactive and visually stimulating exhibits, each designed to connect with the week’s central theme of zero waste and sustainable living.

One highlight was our Hydroponics Corner, where students and staff could explore how soil-free farming can support food security and sustainable agriculture.

The display included a functioning hydroponic system along with a digital pH and temperature reader, allowing visitors to measure and understand the environmental factors affecting plant growth.
The Upcycled Art Zone showcased amazing creations made from materials that would normally be discarded – plastic earrings, plant pots, and quirky decorations were all designed by our talented community members to show that waste can have a second life.
Students and staff were also invited to participate in an interactive quiz by scanning a QR code. The quiz tested their knowledge of zero waste practices and placed them on our fun and informative “Green Index”, encouraging reflection and awareness.

To promote sustainable choices in our daily routines, students and staff who brought their own reusable cups received a ¥1 discount on selected drinks at the Ann Café and Hill Canteen, reinforcing the idea that eco-friendly habits can be easy and rewarding.
Student-led efforts were a major highlight throughout the week. The “Zero Plastic for All” initiative led by Judy Zhu and her team was prominently featured. Eric Yang presented a creative display on using coffee grounds for compost, and Jamie Wang introduced a hands-on station where participants could make soap bars using recycled coffee beans.
We also collected used plastic utensils to contribute to building a large plastic globe sculpture – a powerful symbol of what can be achieved through upcycling. Our clothing, toy and book trading was a big success, allowing us to donate 3 large boxes to Buy 42 Charity Store.

On Thursday, 24 April, we were honored to host Mr. Djian Sadadou, a representative from the Office for Climate Education in Paris. Mr. Sadadou gave an engaging seminar to our G1 students about rising sea levels, with a local focus on Shenzhen’s vulnerabilities.
He toured our campus, stopping by key areas such as the 7th floor greenhouse and our waste management station behind SSO, and later led a student workshop on eco-anxiety, attended by over 50 students. Judy’s team also presented their campaign to him, receiving valuable feedback and encouragement.
We wrapped up the week by connecting our efforts to World Creativity & Innovation Day and Mother Earth Day, celebrating the power of young people to lead meaningful change.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to making Zero Waste Week a success! Let’s keep working together to build a more sustainable future.
