Drama G1 Highlight: A journey of theatrical exploration & growth

Bianca Lin, our G1 Drama teacher would like to share some remarkable experiences and heartfelt reflections from our last year’s G1 Drama students. They have embarked on a journey of theatrical exploration and personal growth, and here is their experience with drama:

❒ Olivia Hogarth

I pictured drama students as confident, eccentric, and self-assured, which made the idea of joining their ranks intimidating for a generally shy year nine student like myself. I was scared of being judged, criticized, or pushed out of my comfort zone. Despite these fears, I, along with many other drama students, found a sense of community within the class, and my favorite memories by far were made within drama. I have had the privilege of seeing not only myself but also my friends grow into more innovative and creative individuals.

When I first chose drama as an elective, I was captivated by the allure of acting on stage. However, I quickly realized that drama isn’t as easy as it seems. It’s been a challenging but rewarding experience that has broadened my horizons.

G1 Drama students have experimented with different theatrical projects throughout the year. Now, let’s take a glimpse at some of their outstanding performances!

① Stage Combat project

Our drama students delved into the captivating world of stage combat, mastering physical expression. From slaps to punches, falls to electrifying grabs, they honed their skills. Feast your eyes on their mesmerizing performance from “Taming of the Shrew” as Katherine and Petruchio’s first encounter. It’s a short but dynamic spectacle that showcases their creativity and self-discovery journey!

② Puppetry Project

G1 drama students also dived into the captivating world of puppetry, infusing life into their DIY puppets.

Let’s hear from Angelina Deng, who shares her thoughts on this intriguing project:

“The most fascinating project in Drama this year was definitely the Puppetry! From a few rolls of kraft paper to a humorous comedian, it was an extraordinary experience. We worked as a team, decorating our puppet with items that held personal significance to each of us, resulting in many laughter-filled moments.

By manipulating different body parts, we brought our puppet to life. As someone who usually prefers individual work, I found myself immersed in the process.

When we all put aside our own personalities and focused on the puppet, I felt fulfilled. That’s what I find so enchanting about Drama—the courage to let go of our “selves” and create something extraordinary.”

③ Devising Project

Our drama students also enjoyed an exciting opportunity to engage with all aspects of theatre-making, experimenting with various styles, themes, and techniques to create their own performances.

Let’s take a glimpse at some of their outstanding performances!

Let’s hear from our students, who shares their thoughts on this project:

♦ Melinda Cai

Out of all the projects I take, it is indeed the one that requires the most time and effort, but that is also what makes it so appealing. Devising is the coursework which brought me the largest sense of achievement; even though it is very difficult, I now know that I am capable of making a play from scratch.

What are our students saying after their one-year study?

♦ Coco Hong

Opting for Drama was a tough decision, and I faced skepticism from my parents. I doubted myself many times, but I never regretted it. Drama has brought me more than just acting skills—it has transformed me in ways I never imagined.

♦ Yoyo Wang

Honestly, drama lessons were the highlight of my time at SCIE. Unlike other courses, drama provided a unique environment where I met interesting peers and exceptional teachers. Engaging in fun activities and creative work significantly enhanced my diverse skills. Joining this course helped me form valuable friendships and collaborate on fulfilling projects.”

♦ Olivia Hogarth

I fully believe that drama encompasses the best portion of the student body (I am in no way, shape, or form biased, haha) and some of the best teachers, especially for G1. Drama is a place where students are encouraged to have fun and embrace humor and connection in a supportive, judgment-free environment. While it requires hard work, the effort is worth it to create pieces and performances that you can take pride in.

♦ Richie Zhang

The real charm of drama isn’t its academic rigor but the social opportunities it offers. Here, creativity and imagination thrive through lights, action, lines, and every aspect of production. Post-performance gatherings and celebrations build connections across different classes.”

Theatre Trip to Hong Kong

As a G1 Drama teacher, I am incredibly proud of our students and their growth throughout the year. They have embraced challenges, discovered their potential, formed lasting friendships, and celebrated their achievements.

Drama has provided them with a platform to express themselves, develop diverse skills, and create unforgettable memories.
