Subject Department Introduction:
Chemistry has 20 full-time teachers and 6 technicians, working in our 11 purpose-built labs. Teachers will have a variety of classes from IGCSE Chemistry in UK Years 10 and 11 and AS/AL Chemistry in UK Years 12 and 13. AP Chemistry is also offered to KS5 students whose trajectory better suits taking it. The subject is highly popular throughout the school with about two thirds of the cohort taking it at AS level and half the cohort at A Level. Results are very high, with over 86% achieving A/A* at IGCSE and almost 74% at A Level Chemistry in the most recent CAIE exams. Each year a number of students choose to apply to Chemistry courses in top universities in the UK and US, with a significant number taking up places in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Materials Sciences courses at Oxbridge.
The ideal candidate will be willing to adapt to the dynamics of the current team, be a pro-active team member and be passionate about incorporating regular practical work into their teaching repertoire. Experience of teaching Chemistry at the highest levels is a basic expectation and the ability to facilitate extension classes in Chemistry or Biochemistry will be an advantage. Being willing and able to ‘teach to the top’ and scaffold up is essential; the successful candidate will be expert in providing regular opportunities for ‘hard thinking’ and will consistently use checking for understanding techniques, to make learning adaptive.
