Upon Emerald Waves, Amidst Ocean Swells | A First Paddle Toward the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award

On January the 11th, 15 intrepid students set out to brave the icy waters in kayaks to prepare for their Duke of Edinburgh International Award. The weekends training was designed to give the students the skills and confidence to take part in a weeklong kayaking expedition to Thailand.

Kayaking is a new experience for me and I have been looking forward to it. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to take the Silver journey at IA. It was thrilling as I set off in a kayak against the waves and into the sea. Immediately off the beach, the swash area is the most challenging area with the violent waves where my kayak capsized twice in a roll. Luckily, I learned about techniques like the low brace that helped keep me balanced by pressing the paddle against the wave for support. Moreover, we learned how to go in a straight line, turn with front sweep and reverse sweep, and many more.

Most importantly, we learn rescuing techniques. I was lucky enough to have gotten the opportunity to rescue someone and be rescued. Although I have practiced rescuing and have seen several demonstrations, my heart raced and I felt like ages passed when I was in the icy water. I am glad that I know what to do thanks to the training and guidance of the coach. I feel confident about the Thailand trip and can’t wait to apply everything I’ve learned!

Kayaking is totally a new journey for me. I was extremely nervous when I first sat in the kayak. I cannot control my body balance, so my kayak capsized. It was very terrible, I felt like I might drown, but the coach came and helped me to get on the kayak again. Then after training and trying again with the coach, I could finally kayak by myself.

Overall, I learnt many rescue methods that can be helpful in an emergency. And I hope to make more progress for the future journey!
