EARCOS Teachers Conference

Rebecca Bohn

Teacher of English

Last March, I was privileged to attend the EARCOS teachers conference in Malaysia. The conference focused on “Creating a Culture of Care.” I attended many training sessions that encouraged teachers to interact with students in more meaningful ways. One important session that I attended was titled “Embedding SEL (Social Emotional Learning) and Mindfulness into school culture. As teachers, we have become increasingly aware of the need for emotional wellbeing and mental health to cultivate and sustain resilient and thriving learning communities. This session highlighted the successes an international school in Thailand has achieved in embedding SEL and mindfulness into their learning culture. The speaker gave specific techniques and examples of how SEL and mindfulness can become a part of school culture. I am excited to return with these ideas and share them with SCIE.

The workshop is based on suicide first aid with the primary focus on preventing suicide. This introductory course gives you guidance on how to be a caregiver to someone who has thoughts of suicide. The basic model is known as PAL (Pathway for Assisting Life) that is based on three main pillars known as connecting with suicide, understanding choices, and assisting life.

Using this model serves as a framework for guiding questions for someone with suicidal thoughts. The primary objective is to end the conversation by getting the person to a safe place with trusted support networks.
