This syllabus has been devised to allow candidates choice, while at the same time ensuring a suitable breadth of study within the subject.
These provide a broad framework of art and design practice, and indicate an approach which encourages exploration, within either traditional or contemporary art forms, and candidates are encouraged to produce a variety of creative responses through a wide range of materials, processes and techniques.
The syllabus is not prescriptive, in the way that other factually-based subjects are, but instead students may choose to pursue their own interests in terms of choice of medium and theme of study.
Students may pick one or more from a selection of media in Fine Art, including:
Painting:

- Pastels
- Watercolour
- Chinese ink painting

- Mixed media
- Photography
At the end of the course students must sit two examinations, each of which contributes 50% to the final grade.
The examinations can have different themes concentrating on either direct observation such as a still life study, portrait or an interpretative study based on a concept or theme.
In each case students are informed of the questions in advance and have a period of preparation, in which students should support the examination piece with a portfolio including investigation, research, evaluation and development.
Each examination involves an eight-hour final piece.

The Cambridge International A Level Art and Design syllabus encourage self expression and visual communication. Learners gain an understanding of visual perception and aesthetic experience, and the ways in which art and design creates a
language of its own. Most of the work for this syllabus is practical or studio based, so that learners can develop their abilities of observation and analysis of the visual world, sensitivity, skill, personal expression and imagination. They also learn how to relate their skills to an enhanced knowledge of Art history, their own cultures, past and present, as well as an appreciation of practical design problems.
Candidates will be expected to demonstrate:
- Individuality; and show a sensitive and creative response to their subject.
- Independent thinking, and artistic curiosity.
- Mastery in the use of media techniques/processes, and an ability to
- Research, observe and record as appropriate.
- An ability to recognize surface, shape, color, form, relationships, and to compose/organize compositions. In addition, to presents and communicates ideas, intentions as appropriate.
- The ability to analyse, evaluate their chosen subject and to communicate personal views and judgments, whilst displaying cultural awareness and understanding.
