Grasp the whole and implement the details
Ladies and gentlemen, dear teachers and fellow students,
Good afternoon. I am Miranda, Xie Kexin, an A1 student from Shenzhen College of International Education (which I will refer to as SCIE later on). Undoubtedly, there are many other students who achieved outstanding results in CIE exams in our school and it’s a great honour for me to have the opportunity to share my CIE study experience with you as a representative.
I was a new G2 student last year and I am very grateful that SCIE provides me with such an excellent platform to study IGCSE and A-Level courses and enrich myself in various ECA and other activities. And I want to thank all my teachers who endowed me with precious knowledge and helped me achieve satisfying results in this year’s CIE exams. Besides their efforts, I also would like to attribute my exam results to the experience I had during my study at IGCSE level.
In general, they are four words to me—target, enthusiasm, perseverance and introspection. This is a principle that applies to every single subject. Everything starts from ‘target’. It’s targets that prevent us from being aimless so that we can have a sense of direction. In my learning process, I will set targets for myself at every stage; some are in the short-run while others are for the further future. But targets don’t necessarily mean pushing yourself too hard. Merely a target is far from enough. The remaining three concepts are about how to make targets come true. Firstly you’ll need enthusiasm to confront every challenge you come across in your learning process. An enthusiastic and optimistic attitude is very crucial. Perseverance in working for the target is another important element. As the saying goes, Rome is not built in one day. There are so many moments when I feel exhausted or afraid, I also thought of giving up. But it is perseverance and persistence that made me hold on till today. I am only A1 and I still have a long way to go, it will also be a great challenge for me to stick to my goal with perseverance. Finally, you have to make sure all the efforts are leading you onto the correct path, that’s why we all need introspection from time to time. Only in this way can change be made and errors of the past won’t occur again.
In detail, it is more about learning each subject in an efficient way. As a new G2 last year, I have to cover 8 courses in less than one year compared two years for normal G2 students. As a result, the lessons were much faster and a bit less detailed. An effective way of learning each subject is therefore crucial. The prerequisite is to adopt a correct attitude and make sure that you attend every lesson carefully with homework done in high quality on time.
Chinese should be an advantage for us since it is our mother language and CIE exam for Chinese is relatively easy. Doing more past papers familiarizes you with the criteria for marking so that your own answers are more likely to score high marks.
As for mathematics and physics, the essence is to acquire methods of problem solving and apply certain methods to various situations. Practicing more and doing summary about mistakes will definitely yield a better grade.
Geography requires understanding of certain physical processes and reasons behind certain phenomenon such as international immigration. It’s crucial that you do a summary on case studies on every possible topic and practice with past paper questions. After every practice, do make sure to look back on the papers and only then will you truly gain experience from them.
Biology is also about understanding and application. It’s necessary that you get familiar with basic knowledge points and doing more practice with past papers to learn how to apply knowledge to certain situations. It’s fairly easy to find past papers on websites such as paper.scie.cf.
For all subjects, a relatively high level of English writing and reading ability is required. So trying to improve such abilities through reading extra materials and paying attention to vocabulary will help a lot.
So far, I think my methods still apply to A-Level study.
Finally, I sincerely wish all the A2 students can obtain a satisfactory offer from their dream universities. And I hope all of us SCIE students can make common progress to achieve better results.
Thank you for your time.
