The 3rd Host Competition
2017-11-24

[SCIE web news, Nov 24th, 2017] This year, the SCIE Host Competition overthrew the tradition. The directors used an ingenious tournament system to keep the audience in surprise.  In the Final, in order to provide the candidates (G2 Stephanie, A1 Gloria, A1 Jack) a fantastic competition, the rules were elaborated into three parts: to give an impromptu speech which should be related to the competition according to what’s inside the mysterious boxes; to extemporaneously compose a theme-based story; to solve problems on site.

Round one: -  Improvisation

Each candidate chose one different box, and gave an impromptu speech according to what it was inside, and the speech should be related to the theme of “SCIE 3rd Host Competition”, with a blessing to the competition.

The way of promotion: Every audience voted for the candidate who performed outstandingly, and the most popular candidate, who had the highest approval rating, could directly be promoted to the final round.

Stephanie first chose the mysterious box which was in front of her, and took a book “3500 Barron’s SAT Words” out of the box. She linked the personality which a qualified host should have, with the information and knowledge of this SAT book, and made a wish that the SCIE Host Competition should be continued forever, just like the 300 pages book.

Then, it was Jack’s turn, and what he picked, which led to a roar with laughter, was a lovely classic photo of our Principal Mr. Greenwood, taking by the students during the sport day. Jack associated two words “controlling” and “appreciate” with the photo. And the support from the organizers and the audience to the competition, was just like the contribution and efforts which Mr. Greenwood made for the school. At last he imparted to the competition a good wish.

Finally, the mysterious box of Gloria surprised everyone, there was nothing inside! and maybe it can reflect a set of Philosophy. So Gloria expanded the meaning of “fullness” which is the antonym of “emptiness”, she drew an analogy between the Host Competition and the moon which was full and big, and lavished praise on the fantastic tournament rules.

According to the candidates’ performance and the votes from the audience, Stephanie won and could directly go for the final. Jack and Gloria came into the second round.

Round Two: Please believe me

Two candidates picked one material which was prepared by the director group, one of them would have a real material which had contents on it, the other one would have an empty one. They needed to describe 5 times about the theme in turn. (The one who had the real material just needed to read the script, while the other one needed to pretend he/she got the real one and made it up immediately.) Both candidates were working very hard to describe and convince the audience that he/she had the real material.

The way to grade: after five times description, the audience needed to choose and vote for the candidate who they believed was the one got the real material. The candidate who got more votes can get into the third round.

The theme of the second round was “The smallest middle school in the world”. Both Jack and Gloria showed their strong power in the stage and described the theme in turn, even caught and denied each other’s detail of description. Was it true or false? It was hard to guess who got the real material!

At last, Jack hold the edge of the votes, and got the chance to the final round. But to everyone’s surprise, actually, both Jack and Gloria did not have the real material, what they got was empty one.  They must ‘struggle’ and rack their brains to give the best performance which we enjoyed the most!

The third round – The battle of solving problems on site

The director group invited two teams of guest performers, and asked them to make an ‘accident’ during their performance. The two candidates did not know what happened beforehand, and needed to take action quickly to make sure the competition continued.

The way to grade: according to the performance of both candidates, every audience should choose the one who they thought was better, and the one who got the highest amount of votes won the championship.

The first performer was the winner of SGT, Johnny. He was playing a very relaxing and happy music on the violin while the lights went out suddenly. The music stopped immediately because of the power cut. Jack came on the stage timely and explained to the audience in a calm voice. When everyone was waiting for the technician to fix the power issue, Jack was talking with Jonny leisurely, solving the problem by changing the ‘awkward’ moments into a pleasure time for chatting.

What came to Stephanie was a head-on clash, Lucas and Patrick, the second team of guest performers, came on the stage, saying that they don’t want to sing, and then left directly. Stephanie still hold her aura of confidence, and coordinated with them leisurely, and persuaded them should not let the audience down, and finally, they came back on the stage and brought an exciting song .

At last, Jack gained the champion of SCIE 3rd Host Competition. And the night, the three candidates, Jack, Gloria and Stephanie impressed every audience with their confidence, their ability to adapt, their fluency in English during the competition, showing the wonderful power of language to everyone.

We thank the candidates, the guests, and the audience for supporting this competition.

Thanks all the staff who worked so hard and made this competition so successful.

Attached, you can see the wechat moment which Jack issued to thank everyone’s support and every effort from TBU was to reward the audience.

Let’s see each other again next year.
